Ill.
steps up
efforts
to lure
film
money,
jobs
Although
Illinois'
film
industry
generated
a
near-record
$141
million
last
year,
competition
among
states
for
Hollywood
dollars
is
getting
cattier.
And some
lawmakers
think
Illinois
can do
more to
hog the
spotlight.
Looking
to
bolster
Illinois'
standing
as an
alternative
to
Hollywood,
legislators
made the
state's
tax
breaks
beefier
and
permanent.
As of
Jan. 1,
qualified
filmmakers
can get
a 30
percent
tax
credit,
up 10
percent,
for
money
spent
for
Illinois
goods --
things
like
costumes,
equipment,
trucks
and
lighting
-- and
services,
including
in-state
wages.

Analysts
say
stimulus
too late
for some
housing
A
$4
billion
stimulus
boost
for the
nation's
public
housing
authorities
may be
too late
for some
complexes
and
should
go to
fixing
up
properties
in
healthier,
more
mixed-income
neighborhoods,
according
to some
analysts.
Every
public
housing
authority
in the
nation —
about
3,200 in
all —
will get
a share
of
stimulus
funds
that
they can
use for
new
kitchens,
roofs,
plumbing
and
other
upgrades
to their
buildings.
Chicago,
for
example,
will get
$144
million.
Nicodemus,
Kan.,
population
52, will
get
$13,936. More |

it's the

Navy
Pier’s
Green
Fest™ a
Rousing
Success
On
Saturday
and
Sunday,
May 16
and 17,
Navy
Pier
hosted
the
Green
Festival
for the
2nd
consecutive
year.
The
purpose
of the
festival
is to
lead the
push
toward
making
our
society
healthier—socially,
economically,
and
environmentally.
On this
weekend
many
organizations
and
businesses
showcased
programs
and
products
that
provide
the
bases of
a more
“eco-friendly”
world.
At first
glance
some of
the
programs
and
products
may seem
out of
reach
for the
average
family.
For
example,
the cost
of
installing
a solar
or wind
power
system
to run a
household
is very
expensive.
However,
a closer
look--a
true
analysis--
will
reveal
that
even
though
the
initial
costs
are
higher,
these
systems
can more
than pay
for
themselves
over a
few
years.
Plus, we
learned,
limiting
the
emissions
from a
normal
household
is a
foremost
function
of
alternative
energy
sources
and
truly a
step in
the
right
direction.

Real-world
skill
prepped
nominee
Op-Ed
By: Hugh
H. Mo
As
the
confirmation
process
goes
forward,
Supreme
Court
nominee
Sonia
Sotomayor’s
legal
experience
and
judicial
philosophy
will be
closely
dissected
and
analyzed
from
every
perspective,
including
the
parsing
of the
meanings
and
nuances
of
common
words
used to
describe
her or
attributable
to her.
As the
political
debate
continues
over the
meaning
of
“empathy,”
or the
impact
of her
gender
and
ethnic
heritage
on Judge
Sotomayor’s
qualifications,
judicial
philosophy
and her
commitment
to
interpreting
the
Constitution,
in the
end, I
believe
the best
way to
view her
qualifications
is
through
the lens
of her
time as
an
assistant
district
attorney
in New
York
during
one of
the
worst
crime
sprees
in a
generation.
That
real
world
experience
– as a
skilled
legal
practitioner
who not
only
ruthlessly
pursued
justice
for
victims
of
violent
crimes
but
understood
the root
causes
of crime
and how
to curb
it –
will
serve
her, and
the
country,
well on
the
Supreme
Court.

Be Ready
for
Tornado
Season

March,
April,
and May
are peak
months
for
tornadoes
in
Illinois.
While
most
tornadoes
are
relatively
weak in
intensity,
wind
speeds
can
range
from 70
to
almost
300
miles
per
hour.
Improved
tracking
systems
such as
Doppler
radar
and
volunteer
spotters
have
decreased
the
numbers
of
injuries
and
deaths
in
Illinois.
"But,
these
improvements
should
not lull
us into
thinking
we are
fully
protected,"
says
Duane
Friend,
University
of
Illinois
Extension
natural
resources
educator.
"Preparing
a
tornado
plan,
being
aware of
watches
and
warnings,
and
constructing
or
strengthening
buildings
against
wind
damage
will
help
keep
people
from
being
caught
in a
dangerous
situation."
